Digital draping: the drape test, run at home
A draping session holds pairs of fabrics under your chin and watches which one makes your skin look clearer. Digital draping does the same comparisons on screen or with things you already own. Here is each comparison, what it tells you, and how to get a reliable read.

The four comparisons every drape test makes
| Drape pair | What it measures | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| White vs cream | Undertone (cool vs warm) | The right one evens out redness and shadows; the wrong one makes skin look sallow or grey |
| Silver vs gold | Undertone, second check | Which metal makes your skin look brighter rather than tired |
| Black vs soft brown or navy | Value and contrast | Whether strong darks frame your face or overpower it |
| Saturated vs dusty versions of one color | Chroma (bright vs muted) | Bright colors that look vivid next to you, or ones that wear you |
On-screen drapes vs fabric
On-screen drapes overlay colors on a selfie. They are quick, but a phone camera adjusts white balance and exposure on its own, and indoor light shifts skin tone, so the same face can read warm in one photo and cool in the next. Fabric drapes in daylight remove the camera from the loop. Our 12-question quiz takes that route: you make the comparisons yourself, with things you own, and answer what you see.
Run a drape test at home
- Stand facing a window in indirect daylight, bare-faced, hair pulled back.
- Hold a pure white and a cream item (T-shirt, towel, paper) under your chin, one at a time, and look at your skin, not the fabric.
- Repeat with silver and gold jewelry, then with black against a softer dark.
- Finish with a bright and a dusty version of the same color.
- Enter what you saw in the quiz: it maps undertone, value and chroma to one of the 12 seasons.
Reading borderline results
If two drapes look equally good, you are probably close to the border between two neighbouring seasons, for example Soft Autumn and Soft Summer. Your result page lists those neighbours; test three anchor colors from each against your face in the same window light before you shop. Questions
Is digital draping accurate?
It depends on the light. Selfie-based drapes depend on your camera and room lighting; comparisons you make yourself in indirect daylight are easier to repeat. Repeat the test on a second day if a result surprises you.
Do I need special drapes?
No. White and cream items, a silver and a gold piece of jewelry, something black and a bright and dusty version of one color are enough.
What is the difference between draping and a color analysis quiz?
A quiz records the outcome of draping comparisons as answers, then maps undertone, value and chroma to a season. It is the same logic, written down.
